Les photographes du 19e siècle nous ont laissé des images de monuments, de villes, de visages, mais aussi des moments de rencontre entre humains et nature. La Bibliothèque de Genève dévoile en photos une des premières phases de l’essor du tourisme occidental, construction sociale, économique et culturelle aujourd’hui devenue globale.
La montagne, ses glaciers, l’esprit de conquête des touristes qui s’y engagent suscitent une riche moisson de clichés. Paradoxalement, l’environnement alpin admiré est immédiatement et invariablement standardisé et mué en marchandise. Aujourd’hui, ces photographies, devenues archives, révèlent la manière dont les interactions entre culture et nature participent d’une histoire commune.
