Date
30 September 2024–25 January 2025
Venue
Bibliothèque de Genève - Atelier Jullien
The photographers of the 19th century left us images of monuments, towns and faces, but also moments of encounter between people and nature. The Bibliothèque de Genève reveals in photos one of the first phases in the rise of Western tourism, a social, economic and cultural construction that has now become global.
The mountains, their glaciers and the spirit of conquest of the tourists who set out in them have produced a rich harvest of images. Paradoxically, the Alpine environment we admire is immediately and invariably standardized and commodified. Today, these photographs, which have become archives, reveal how the interactions between culture and nature are part of a shared history.
