New Swiss Views #12, Switzerland, 2022. From the series New Swiss Views (2021-2022) © Marwan Bassiouni.
FOCALE is pleased to invite you on Thursday, September 5th to the presentation and signing event of Marwan Bassiouni’s latest book, “New Swiss Views,” published by The Sand Station. The event will take place as part of the Swiss Photography Month and will echo his solo exhibition at AKKU KUNSTPLATTFORM, on view from August 31st to October 6th, 2024.
“New Swiss Views” is the continuation of “New Dutch Views,” for which Marwan Bassiouni photographed the Dutch landscape from inside the prayer rooms of Islamic places of worship. In 2021, the artist embarked on a new journey across a national landscape. Crossing mountains, lakes, and countryside, cities, suburbs, and villages, Bassiouni once again focused his lens on the views from mosque windows. This time, he concentrated on the iconic Swiss landscape while exploring the presence and identity of the Swiss Muslim community. “New Swiss Views” presents the evolution of Bassiouni’s approach to landscape and architectural photography, identifying the unique character of a Swiss Islamic architecture that is often industrial. The content of these images highlights the conditions of a growing, yet young and modest, minority, while inviting reflection on coexistence and suggesting a different representation of “Islam” in the West.
“New Swiss Views” presents a rhythmic and pictorial sequence of 41 color documentary photographs. Each image depicts a real situation corresponding to an existing reality. The book was published in August 2024 by The Sand Station (Amsterdam).
